How the register is paid

Updated

Reading the register costs nothing. The money that pays for checking it comes from two places, and this page names both, says how each is marked and lists what neither of them is allowed to change.

18+18+ only. Gambling can be addictive — play within a limit you set before you start. Free, confidential help: BeGambleAware, GamCare and the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Self-exclude from every UK-licensed site at GAMSTOP.

Who is paid

Payments go to the publisher, Harbourleigh Publishing Limited, Grand Ocean Plaza, Ocean Village, Gibraltar GX11 1AA. No writer on the desk earns a bonus for registrations, and no operator is invoiced for being listed: an entry exists because a licence exists, not because a fee was settled.

The three kinds of link

Tracked operator links
Buttons and brand links that open through an address beginning /go/. When a reader follows one and goes on to register, the operator can owe us a fee. Deals differ from brand to brand: some pay a single amount for a new depositing customer, some pass on a share of what that customer later loses over a period, and some combine the two. We do not publish individual deal terms, which are commercial agreements with each operator.
Paid placements in articles
A number of articles carry a link that another business paid to have placed there, and a plain line under each page admits it. A placement is bought space, not an endorsement, and we do not vouch for what sits behind it.
Reference links
GamCare, GAMSTOP, BeGambleAware, the Commission’s own register, the National Gambling Helpline and the other public sources we cite. Nobody pays for these, and they open directly rather than through /go/.

What the money cannot buy

  • Position. Order follows the criterion printed in the heading.
  • Different wording. A paid entry and an unpaid one carry the same fields and leave out the same things.
  • A licence that is not there. Every operator in the register holds a Commission licence for Great Britain; a brand without one is not listed, whatever it offers.
  • Silence about a problem. If a licence is suspended or an offer breaks the wagering cap, the entry says so or comes down.
  • A softer description of risk. Safer-gambling information stays on every page regardless of who pays.

Your side of a tracked link

It costs you nothing, and we neither add to nor remove from what the operator offers. Opening a /go/ address sets two short-lived technical cookies, mozbiz_session and XSRF-TOKEN, while the redirect is handled; they expire within about a day. The operator’s own site then sets its cookies under its own policy, which is where the commission is recorded. Our cookie policy lists everything set from this domain.

Prefer to avoid tracked links altogether? Search for the operator yourself or reach it from the Commission’s register; the entry is still there to read either way.

Advertising rules

In the UK, content that earns a commission from the brands it mentions counts as marketing under the CAP Code, and marketing has to be recognisable as such. That is the reason for the line in our footer and for this page. Gambling marketing must also not be aimed at under-18s or present gambling as a way out of money trouble; if you think a page of ours slips on either point, we want to know.

Keeping the arrangements honest

Operators report commissions on their own systems, and those reports are compared with the register’s own count of outbound clicks. When an arrangement ends, the entry stays exactly as long as the licence does; only the button changes. When a placement in an article expires or the site behind it changes hands, the link is reviewed like any other. A row is never added because a deal was signed, and never removed because a deal lapsed.

Questions

Write to [email protected] about any link, entry or arrangement. Corrections and complaints about a paid link are read by the same desk that keeps the register. The wider limits of what we promise are on the disclaimer page.
